SEPTEMBER
MONTHLY MEETING
"
Managing Allergens within the Food Industry "
Speaker:
Analee J. Rubio; Technical
Services Manager
Just
Born, Inc.
Date:
Monday, Sept. 13, 2010
Abstract:
Are you or someone you know allergic to certain foods? Have
you ever wondered who monitors the use and labeling of allergens
within the food industry? Food allergies are a growing public
health concern in the United States with over 12 million
Americans affected. Of those, the highest incidence occurs
in children. In fact, reactions in children result in more
than 300,000 ambulatory-care visits a year. Children must
rely on parents for guidance, parents must rely on labels
for guidance, and the food industry must rely on legislation
for guidance. There are no cures for food allergies and
so strict avoidance is imperative for those afflicted. Please
join us Monday, September 13th for a discussion of food
allergens and their effect on manufacturing, labeling, legislation,
consumers and you.

"Controlling a Process, You Don't Own"
Paul Kelly, Quality Engr.,
Teleflex Medical
ASQ LV Chapter - Oct 2010 meeting
Abstract: Controlling
variation in your processes many times takes you upstream
to a supplier. Regulated industry quality systems require
working with suppliers to control quality. A Lean Six Sigma
project looked to make improvements in resin quality used
in the manufacturing of surgical and critical care medical
products.
Speaker Bio: Paul
started his working career in semiconductor manufacturing
with a BS in Computer Science, from Moravian College. He
worked as a Photolithography process engineer for over 20
years at both AT&T's Allentown Works and Fairchild Semiconductor's
Mountain Top facility. With movement overseas of semiconductor
manufacturing, a transition to the medical industry came
about in 2007. Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and ASQ CQE certifications
have propelled enjoyment of the quality field to date. Paul
is currently working as a Quality Engineer with Teleflex
Medical (formerly Arrow International) in Reading PA.
